I need my Grep

Category : PC-Installation - by webMaster_alaindereninfo

As many people, I worked under windows most of the time.
But I like to use unix command under windows. What is convenient to perform a "grep" command in a list of files to retrieve the correct information.

So in my previous PC, under XP Pro, I installed SFU ("Services for Unix") from Microsoft, a free extension.

This summer, on my new laptop under Windows 7 pro, I tried to perform the same, but what a mess !
I spent a certain time to understand that SFU is not for Win7. The error message is particularly "unclear".

But it's a new feature named SUA ("Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications"). You can find here: http://suacommunity.com/sua.aspx

And again, very unclear error message, sounds that the file was unproperly downloaded and corrupted.
After some search in the forum ("http://www.suacommunity.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=19439"), it happens that SUA is for Windows server 2008, and Windows 7 for Business and Ultimate Edition. Not for "Win7 Pro" !

Thanks a lot, Microsoft ! So now the "win7 pro", is just useless as "home" edition !

At the end, I installed another Unix-Posix : UWIN from ATT

I found this note very useful to install UWIN:

The installation process is very light, but I succed at the end.

Glory to the grep command under windows!

Next step: install a dual Hard Drive in place of the DVD drive, and a Cent OS on it. And let's go...
